Supporting Your Child’s Health at Springwell Lincolnshire

At Springwell Lincolnshire, your child’s health, safety, and well-being are our highest priorities. We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for all our pupils, including those with medical conditions. Our aim is to ensure that all children have full access to our curriculum and are supported to participate in all aspects of academy life.

We understand the importance of working in close partnership with parents, carers, and healthcare professionals to ensure we meet the individual needs of your child. Our procedures are guided by the policies of the Wellspring Academy Trust and national best practice.

Managing Medical Conditions and Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs)

For pupils with specific medical needs, such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, or severe allergies, we will work with you to create a personalised Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP). This essential document outlines the specific support your child requires to stay safe and well at school.

The IHP will detail

  • Information about your child’s condition.
  • Any medication required and the dosage.
  • Specific instructions for what to do in an emergency.
  • The level of support your child needs for day-to-day activities, as well as for school trips and physical education.

These plans are developed in collaboration with you and relevant healthcare professionals (if appropriate) and are reviewed annually, or more frequently if your child’s needs change. This ensures that the information we hold is always current and that our staff have the clear, expert guidance they need to provide the best possible care.

Administering Medication at Our Academies

We have a clear procedure for administering medication to ensure the safety of all pupils.

Prescribed Medication

If your child needs to take prescribed medication during the school day, we ask that you:

  1. Complete a consent form: Please contact the academy office to obtain a “Parental Agreement to Administer Medicine” form. This must be completed before any medication can be given by our staff.
  2. Provide medication in its original packaging: All medication must be brought to the academy office by a parent or carer in its original container, as dispensed by the pharmacy, with the prescription label clearly visible.
  3. Keep us updated: It is the responsibility of parents and carers to keep the academy informed of any changes to medication or dosage and to ensure that all medication is in date.

Please note, we are unable to accept medication that has not been prescribed by a doctor. For non-prescription medication, please discuss your child’s needs with the academy office.

First Aid and Emergency Procedures

All our academies have staff who are fully trained in first aid and are equipped to manage accidents and medical emergencies. In the event of a minor accident, first aid will be administered, and you will be informed.

If a more serious incident occurs, we will take all necessary steps to ensure your child receives the appropriate medical attention, which includes calling for an ambulance and contacting you immediately. The clear instructions within a child’s Individual Healthcare Plan are vital in guiding our response in an emergency.

Our Commitment to You

We are dedicated to ensuring your child is safe, happy, and healthy at our academies. If you have any questions or wish to discuss your child’s medical needs, please do not hesitate to contact your local academy office.
